The LA arboretum is a great alternative to the Huntington Library, which can be a tad bit too expensive for their photography permit fees. By the way, be wary of any photographer that claims you don’t need a permit to shoot at these locations, since they risk having the session halted (costing time and money) or worse yet banned or blacklisted from a venue.
